When You Feel Like You Don’t Have a Purpose in Life

As a young entrepreneur, it is pretty easy to be bogged down by this idea of feeling like I don’t have a purpose in life. Some days I feel purposeful. While on the other hand, there will be days when I have no idea what I am doing or why I am doing it. Ultimately, my goal is to create the success that I envision and serve others the best I can, to the best of my ability.

I get a lot of questions running through my mind that look somewhat like this:

  1. Is what I am doing a long-lasting and fulfilling career?
  2. Am I serving others in the way I know best?
  3. Does my purpose have yet to be discovered?
  4. Is my life purpose career-based? Or is it more aligned with my life choices in general?

Many of you, or some of you, are reading this and asking or have asked yourselves the same questions.

Well, either way, you’re not alone.

As a young adult with so much left to figure out, I want to encourage you in this journey. I am still finding my purpose daily. I am embracing gratitude, staying grounded, educating myself in my career and life, and constantly (attempting to) fill my cup.

When I complete these items listed above, I feel as though my alignment with my life’s purpose is just on the horizon. I feel it in my heart. I feel it in my gut. I feel it in my soul.

And now, I want you to feel the same way.

You Need to Live Life on Purpose

You need to live life ON purpose.

Okay—

Now that we have that established, what exactly does that mean?

Well, I don’t have the answer to “What’s my life purpose?” But I do have recommendations for living a life that is on purpose. In everyday life, we either have control or we are controlled. The first gives me more comfort than the latter.

So, how do you live life on purpose?

You do everything with intention. When I decide to spend “x” amount of time on a project, there is a reason.

When I prioritize taking time to work on my mental well-being, there is most definitely a reason for it.

When I choose to work for a client, there is purpose behind it.

I believe in their business. And when they choose to work with my business, it shows they believe in me.

Living life on purpose entails many things. It can be having intention with every decision you make, living your life to the “fullest,” or living in alignment with your life’s purpose. Whatever this ultimately means to you, by all means, I encourage you to do it. Don’t let the stress of not knowing your purpose hold you back from living a purposeful life.

What Does Gratitude Mean to Me?

I want to tie the idea of gratitude into this conversation about life and life’s purposes.

Gratitude can mean a lot of things to many different people.

Sometimes the idea of gratitude is a more Biblical principle. Sometimes it’s a courtesy practice with strangers or individuals not part of our “inside world.” Sometimes it’s a genuine practice from the heart that you use to love and bring light to the things you enjoy and even possibly don’t enjoy as much.

How Does Gratitude Involve My Life’s Purpose?

Regardless of how you see gratitude, it’s essential to realize the weight it holds. When you are grateful for the things you saw coming or didn’t see coming, there is joy in being thankful.

I just won $900 over the weekend. I was grateful for this little blessing I received.

However, finding gratitude in life's unpleasant things can be more challenging. No one (really) wants to be grateful for a drop in sales or a loss of a client. That can mean more stress for you, a lack of financial security, or even facing a path you are not comfortable with yet in your business.

When you find gratitude in life’s difficulties, you are presented with something new: the chance to look at the loss as a new opportunity.

What are you going to do from here?

Are you going to adjust your marketing strategy?

Are you going to put ten percent more effort into a current project you’re working on?

Are you going to go all in on your dream business idea?

Are you going to find new ways to budget your time and money?

There are so many eye-opening moments in both life and business. When you embrace gratitude, a new path will be brought to light.

Gratitude Affirmations (I Use for Business and Life)

I encourage you to consider what you read here and make it your own. If you don’t feel like you are at a point to realize your life’s purpose, or if you’re just beginning your career journey, don’t feel pressured to have these questions answered.

Start small.

Begin with something like being grateful for the journey that you’re on.

Begin with being grateful for a new day to figure out what makes you feel fulfilled.

Below, I’ve put just a few of my favorite affirmations I use for embracing gratitude while realizing my life’s purpose. Feel free to use any of these as you’re going through this process in your own life:

  1. I am so grateful for the opportunity to do what I love daily.
  2. I am so grateful to work with people who teach me more about myself and what I want out of this life.
  3. I am so grateful for new business opportunities that allow me to discover my favorite work within my favorite niche(s).
  4. I am so grateful for more time in my schedule to discover exactly what I want to do and who I want to work with.
  5. I am so grateful that I don’t know what is coming in my future, but to know that whatever it is, it will be incredible for me.
